Loves Learning

Canton and Liberty had a ton of fun yesterday learning and making.

In Makers Canton did some soldering while making an Electroluminescent wire. He learned about the chemistry behind it too, neon, lead, etc.

In Geography the taped a huge jigsaw of the US and another of the world and labeled continents, countries, etc.

Canton made a small and a large drawing string bag in sewing and finished a cat tail in cats.

Between classes Joe taught Canton all about frequency, amplitude, sound waves vs light waves, and pitch on an oscilloscope.

All the girls love Liberty and she had tons of fun being fawned over and playing dolls.

Back to the Grind

We had a wonderful time in Florida, but today we had to go back to the grind. Canton, of course, put up a big fit about going back to regular school, so we eased into things with a day at Raw Learning.

This morning we made returning rollers in Makers which applied potential vs kinetic energy, hacked and repaired in Makerspace, made a mobile map in Geography, a drawstring bag in sewing, and learning about what cat tails mean in certain positions and made a cat tail in animal class. Between classes kids worked on marbles runs in the hallway and played air hockey.

Liberty had a great time crawling around tunnels, playing Barbies, puzzles, and building a Thomas track!

Liberty is 15 months

Lots of changes again for Liberty!

She LOVES LOVES LOVES spaghetti, but she is still dealing with two teeth! Speaking of things she loves: SHOES! Rhonda bought her some dress shoes in FL and she took off through the store on those things like she has worn them for 20 years! She loves to take them off and put them on all by herself! I see a closet full in her future! πŸ™‚

She has shown a lot of interest in the potty and has done both 1 and 2 several times! She is so proud of herself!

She has also added “ball” “Rha Rha” and “Nanny” to her vocab! She gets so excited saying “Nanny!” She can make sounds/identify lots of animals, our favorite is still pig though, hilarious! But she’s added the sign and sounds for cat, dog, and a few others.

Yay for a great 15 months!

Spaghetti Tower, Compass Rose, and Bean Bag, Oh MY!

Canton had quite a day!

He woke up around 4am with quite a cough and didn’t go back to sleep until about 6:30am. When I woke him for school he said that he did not want to go, but then he said “Oh, well I have to go to Makers, so I”ll go to that.” Since he offered it up and having the tough mama I had, I knew it would be best for him to not use his cough as an excuse not to do anything (like daddy πŸ™‚ ) So, I let school know he wasn’t going to be there and off we went.

In Makers class he made a spaghetti tower that reached 41 inches, the second highest in the class! The only help I gave was in tearing masking tape, to assist with those fine motor skills. Before we knew it it was time for Geography.

In geography class they discussed the history of transportation from Europe to North America. While the instructor was drawing Europe and America on the board Canton reminded him to include the UK, Iceland, and Greenland! HA! He answered lots of questions and made a compass rose.

Since Liberty was such a trooper we decided to stay for sewing class. Now, I’m not quite the seamstress Aunt Becky is, I’ve never sewed in my life! So, I wasn’t too much help in this class. So, with help from the teacher, Canton learned about safety of the machine, how to thread the spool/bobbin(?), reverse thread, and using the pedal. He also used the hand crank to stop the machine and turn when needed! All this led to making a bean bag! He was soooooo proud!

School as been getting ratings from 2/10 to 8/10, mostly 5s or 6s. Today according to Canton, “Oh definitely 102/100, bonus points for such a great day!”

Battery Maker

Canton had a lot of first experiences today! He used pennies, zinc washers, and vinegar to make a battery! He measured two 6 inch pieces of wire and cut them all by himself! He also used wire cutters for the first time and a soldering iron! He was so excited to see lead go from solid to liquid to solid again! His battery measured 8 volts, the second highest in the class! πŸ™‚

Wahoo

Well, I guess it was bound to happen living closer to WhoVille, but Canton is officially a UVA fan πŸ™ He and Mike enjoyed his first college game together. Funny quote: “Why do they get louder on third down, if the other team just practices hard they shouldn’t be afraid of more noise.”
